Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Children

At your baby’s first checkup, we’ll take the time to teach you about cavities, nutrition, and other factors that could have an impact on their oral health. We will also look for signs of potential oral health issues as well as unexpected dental developments. Naturally, a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums will be part of every regular checkup; this step is especially important for young children that haven’t learned to brush well yet.

Dental Sealants

In children, cavities tend to form in the molars first, which are hard to reach with a toothbrush. A thin coating known as a dental sealant can help protect this area. Sealants essentially act as shields that stop germs and bits of food from getting caught in the grooves on the surface of the enamel. They are normally applied after the permanent molars erupt; the first molars should appear around age 6, and the second ones will come in around age 12.

Frenectomies/Lip & Tongue-Tie

If your child has trouble with breastfeeding or making certain sounds, it could mean they aren’t able to move their mouths as freely as they should. Both the tongue and the lips are connected to the mouth by a fold of tissue called a frenulum. A frenulum that’s too short or too tight can inhibit movement and lead to all sorts of developmental complications. By using a dental laser, we can loosen or remove a frenulum to free up the child’s lips or tongue so that they’ll be able to eat and speak normally.

Pulp Therapy

Every tooth contains a collection of internal tissues, nerves, and blood vessels known as the pulp. When your child suffers from a traumatic dental injury or severe tooth decay, the pulp can become infected and cause an intense toothache. If we find signs of an infection, we might recommend pulp therapy to try and save the affected tooth. In some cases, this might mean only removing the diseased tissues, but other times, we’ll need to take out the entire pulp before disinfecting and filling the damaged area.

Sedation Dentistry for Children

Nearly a fifth of school age children have dental phobia, which can make dental appointments stressful for everyone. In order to keep your little one calm, we may recommend administering a form of sedation. This will help them feel relaxed as we examine their mouths and perform necessary procedures. Sedation is also useful for children that have a hard time sitting still for long periods. If you think sedation might be right for your child, call us to learn more about the available options.
