TMJ/TMD Diagnosis & Treatment

Man holding jaw in pain

For many patients, persistent jaw pain and headaches are just a fact of life, but they don’t have to be! These common issues are typically associated with a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, or TMD. This involves a problem with the joint that enables your lower jaw to move. Dr. Kandov can determine what is causing a patient’s pain and then provide treatments to correct it, delivering complete relief while improving someone’s oral function at the same time.

Botox® Injections for TMJ

Even though Botox is more well-known for its ability to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it has also been a trusted pain-reliever for decades! With a few quick injections of Botox, Dr. Kandov can stop longstanding TMJ pain in its tracks. Botox actually prevents overactive muscles in the jaw from straining and tightening themselves, which is often the root cause of symptoms like jaw pain, headaches, and even nighttime teeth grinding.

Sedation Dentistry

Sedated dental patient treatment

Going to the dentist makes many patients feel very anxious or even afraid, but sedation dentistry offers a safe, easy way to help these nerves go away so a patient can get the care they need without having to endure stress in the process. Nitrous oxide sedation can enable a patient to feel relaxed in a matter of minutes so routine appointments are always easy, while oral conscious sedation can help patients start feeling less nervous even before they come to our dental office.

Intraoral Camera

Cameras are getting smaller and more powerful all the time, and you can bet that Dr. Kandov is taking advantage of this! With a handheld intraoral camera, she and our team are able to take high-definition images of the teeth and gums that we can then display on a large monitor. This enables us to examine the mouth much more closely and find potential problems that might slip by during a traditional exam. Plus, you’ll finally be able to see your smile from your dentist’s perspective, helping you better understand your oral health.

Digital X-Rays

We use X-rays every single day in our dental office to look at the teeth below the gum line where potential infections, decay, and even cancer might be hidden. Now, with digital X-rays, we’re able to capture and develop extremely sharp images in just a fraction of the time compared to traditional film. Even better, the entire process exposes our patients to less radiation—as much as 90% less, which offers valuable peace of mind.

CT/Cone Beam Scan

Before performing a more complicated procedure, like dental implant placement, we like to put together an extremely precise treatment plan. In order to do this, a regular X-ray simply won’t suffice. This is when we like to use our CT/cone beam scanner, a device that’s able to generate a highly-detailed 3D model of a patient’s entire mouth and jaws. This gives us much more information than your typical X-ray, allowing Dr. Kandov to personalize her approach and guarantee a successful treatment as well as an easy recovery.

Digital Impression System

Dental impressions allow us to create a model of a patient’s teeth and bite so we can better design and personalize their treatments. Rather than having a patient bite down into a mold filled with gooey dental putty to make a physical impression, we can now just scan the teeth instead. Our 3Shape device captures millions of data points about the teeth in just minutes, enabling software to put together a perfect digital impression right before your eyes. This leads to higher quality treatment and longer lasting results.

Soft Tissue Laser Dentistry

Treating the gums used to always involve scalpels and sutures, which as you can imagine, aren’t very comfortable! These days, however, our soft tissue laser enables Dr. Kandov to perform a wide variety of gum-centric procedures faster and more comfortably than ever before. The concentrated beam of light emitted by the laser is able to eliminate bacteria from deep below the gum line and remove excess tissue while minimizing bleeding and discomfort to the point that a patient will barely feel anything while they are in the chair.

PiezoSurgery®

PiezoSurgery system

PiezoSurgery is a handheld device that uses ultrasonic waves to cut bone in a way that is much more precise and less invasive than traditional methods. Often used for dental implant placement, it enables Dr. Kandov to extract a tooth and position an implant within the jawbone much faster than before, all the while keeping a patient more comfortable because the sensitive tissues are being exposed to less trauma. The end result is a faster treatment, shorter recovery, and a patient who is able to enjoy their new smile much sooner!

AquaCare Air Abrasion

AquaCare air abrasion system

The use of a dental drill for the purpose of removing small areas of tooth decay is a bit old fashioned. Instead, Dr. Kandov has chosen a more modern and conservative solution: AquaCare air abrasion. This small yet advanced dental instrument works similar to a miniature sandblaster, spraying a fine stream of water, air, and a fine powder to gradually knock the decay loose so it can be suctioned away. Patients feel very comfortable throughout the treatment process since there is no heat, pressure, or the anxiety-inducing sound of a dental drill It also allows more of the healthy tooth to be successfully preserved.
