Why Choose Olga Kandov, DMD – Brite Smiles for Periodontal Therapy?

Scaling & Root Planing

When gum disease reaches its most advanced stage (periodontitis), it will be beyond the point where it can be reversed by a traditional cleaning. We can instead perform a deep cleaning using two procedures known as scaling and root planing. After plaque and tartar have been removed from above and below the gum line, we will smooth any rough spots on the surface of the tooth’s roots. This gets rid of harmful bacteria and helps the gum tissue heal.

Arestin Antibiotic Therapy

To kill any bacteria in your mouth that might be contributing to gum disease, we can provide antibiotic therapy using a powder-based medication called Arestin. The powder is actually made of several microspheres that each contain minocycline. After the spheres have been injected into a gum pocket, they slowly release the medicine over the course of two to three weeks. In this way, Arestin can directly fight an infection for a long period of time.

DEKA CO2 Laser Dentistry Treatment

DEKA CO2 laser system

Scaling and root planing are typically performed with manual tools, but at Olga Kandov, DMD – Brite Smiles, we can enhance the treatment by using the leading-edge DEKA CO2 laser. This tool essentially evaporates the infected tissue, meaning there’s no need to cut into your gums; in other words, the nearby healthy tissue is preserved. Also, since lasers can help seal exposed blood vessels, there is significantly less bleeding, and recovery time will be much shorter as well.
